John and William BROOKS – Father and Son

John Brooks, 2006

John Brooks, 2010

John B. BROOKS was born in Virginia 10 August 1825.  Both of his parents were also born in Virginia.  He died 26 January 1894 in Williamson County Texas, and is buried in Pond Springs Cemetery.

Between 1850 and 1860, John married Mary J. CARTEE McCLURE, likely in Missouri .  She was born in 1825 in Missouri.  Mary was the widow of John McCLURE.  John BROOKS was the step-father of Green McCLURE and Elizabeth (McCLURE) BOOKER, both of whom are buried in Pond Springs Cemetery.

John BROOKS has not been found prior to the 1860 census.

In 1860 John and  Mary “BROOKES” were in Barry County Missouri (Note:  Laban STEWART and family also lived there at that time).  It is unclear if John served in the Civil War.  Enumerated with the family were Mary’s children – Richard McClure, Margaret McClure, Elizabeth McClure, and Sarah McClure.

In 1870 they were in Greene County MO.   Living with the family were Burton BOOKER (Elijah G Burton BOOKER, born ca 1840 in Sullivan County Tennessee) and his wife Margaret, born in Missouri ca. 1844.  Further research has revealed that Burton BOOKER’s brother, Thomas Henderson BOOKER, married the stepdaughter of John BROOKS, Elizabeth McClure (see above).

In 1880 the family was in Travis County Texas.  Mary J is listed as “nearly blind”.  There were 4 grandchildren with Mary J and John BROOKS, I assume them to be daughters of Harvey BROOKS:

a.  Louisa BROOKS, born in Missouri ca 1867.

b.  Lavada BROOKS, born in Missouri ca 1869.

c.  Maud BROOKS, born in Missouri ca 1871.

d.  Ida M BROOKS, born in Missouri ca 1872.

Known children of John and Mary J:

i.  Harvey BROOKS, born in Missouri ca. 1849.

ii.  Martha BROOKS, born in Missouri ca. 1851/52.

iii.  John BROOKS, born in Missouri ca. 1853.

iv.  Nancy BROOKS, born in Missouri ca. 1855/56.

v.  William BROOKS, born in Missouri 29 November 1858, died Williamson/Travis County TX 8 March 1882.  William is buried in Pond Springs Cemetery, in an enclosed plot with his father.

I personally feel that without a doubt, Mary Jane (CARTEE) BROOKS is also buried in Pond Springs Cemetery.  UPDATE:  She is buried in Carlton, Hamilton County, Texas.
