The Kings

William Alpheus KING was born in Iredell County North Carolina 28 December 1812 to Hugh Brevard KING and Rebecca (GILL) KING, died in Travis County Texas 29 April 1888, and is buried Pond Springs Cemetery.  Mr. King has one of the most distinctive headstones in the cemetery, recently repaired by Buster (see earlier blog entry).

His wife, Elizabeth HARRISON, was born in North or South Carolina 15 December 1815, and died in Travis County Texas 18 June 1871.  Her parents were Luke Ray and Patsy Martha (HARRIS) HARRISON.  She is buried Pond Springs Cemetery also.  Buster recently repaired her stone as well.

After Elizabeth’s death, William KING remarried to Ruth A.  (HILL) RANEY, widow of Giles Burdette RANEY.

In 1840, the family was in Lauderdale County Alabama; in 1850 and 1860, they were in Burleson County Texas; in 1870 and 1880 they were in Travis County Texas.

Known children of William Alpheus and Elizabeth (HARRISON) KING:

i.  John Martin KING, born in Alabama 18 June 1836, died 10 Sept 1918 in Travis County Texas, buried Fiskville Cemetery.  Married Fidelia “Ida” France ROBEY.   She was born in Stephenson County Illinois 17 October 1840, and died in Travis County Texas 27 April 1933.  They had at least 8 children.  One daughter, Fannie KING, is buried in Pond Springs Cemetery.  Fannie KING was one of twins (her sister Annie married a BRATTON and died in 1919).

ii.  Susannah KING, born in Alabama 17 September 1840, died 9 April 1924 in Houston, Harris County, Texas (buried Hollywood Cemetery).  Married David Brown WILKINSON.

iii.  Barthena/Rebecca Almeda KING, born in Alabama 14 January 1838, died 10 July 1917 in Tarrant County Texas.  Married Ezra DENNISON/DENSON.

iv.  Luke C. KING, born in Texas 14 July 1840/41.

v.  Hugh A. KING, born in Texas April 1843, died 1845.

vi.  Polly Martha KING, born in Texas 22 September 1845, died 30 March 1869.  Married Robert T. GAULT.  Buried Pond Springs Cemetery.

vii.  William Rufus KING, born in Texas 9 January 1855, died 15 February 1935 in Tarrant County Texas, buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Fort Worth Texas.  Married Frances McNeal KELLY.

There is an Ellen King also buried in Pond Springs Cemetery, but to date I am unable to establish a familial link.

This is thought to be one of two stones for Fannie

FK. Very near to the King family, I feel this to be the actual burial site of Fannie King, rather than the site of the modern-day granite marker that was obviously placed decades later.

Proximity shot, ca. 2006. L to R, Fannie King, Susan Gault, Polly Gault. Fannie’s original burial is believed to be on the other side of the tree in the background, and facing the opposite direction. The traditional east-west burial did not seem to matter in this cemetery.

  1. Thank you for this blog post. My husband, is the Great, Great, Great, Great Grandson of William Alpheus King through his son John Martin King. I came across this blog while researching his family. I greatly appreciate the time and effort that has gone into this blog and the work that is being done to restore the Pond Springs Cemetery.
