Unknown #26 Identity Confirmed as Mary Catherine Enochs

Mary Catherine (MURDOCK) GLENN ENOCHS

Mary Catherine MURDOCK was born 21 October 1829 in Barbour County, Alabama.  She married William Madison GLENN in Alabama in 1846.  He was murdered in 1863 by his former partner, when she was pregnant with their 9th child.  She nursed him for weeks until he died.  William Madison GLENN is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin Texas.  Mary Catherine married Jason ENOCHS in Travis County Texas on 15 February 1882.  Jason had died in 1898, and is buried in Steiner Ranch Cemetery (formerly Enochs Cemetery).  In the 1900 Williamson County Texas census, she is listed as “Mary E GLENN” (not ENOCHS).  Both of her parents were born in North Carolina.  In the 1910 Williamson County Texas census, Mary C. ENOCHS was an 80-year-old widow.  Her youngest son William was living with her.

Mary is Pond Springs Cemetery’s “Unknown 26”

How I established the identity of Unknown 26:

1  Descendants contacted this blog (in so many cases, these mysteries will not be solved without the assistance of the descendants)   Apparently the records of family researchers said that Mary Catherine Murdock Glenn Enochs was buried in Pond Springs Cemetery, but they never found a marker.

2  Months later, in researching all death certificates for the cemetery, it was discovered that the mother of  William Glenn, who is buried next to Unknown 26, was Mary Catherine Murdock.

3  About a year later, in researching on Find-A-Grave, I noticed that a recent posting of the photo of Mary’s second husband Jason Asbury ENOCHS (died 1898, buried Steiner Ranch Cemetery).  To my surprise, the fencing around her second husband’s grave  was identical to Mary’s.  Visiting remote Steiner Ranch cemetery proved difficult at best, and the Find-A-Grave photo volunteer had remaining photos which showed different framework between the two graves, but similar construction.  Enough for me to call it.

Based on these three pieces of secondary/circumstantial evidence, I decided to favor the preponderance of the evidence, and to “call” Unknown 26 the grave of Mary Catherine Enochs.  Unless or until it can be proven otherwise.

According to family researchers, Mary died 11 December 1911 in Williamson County, and is buried in Pond Springs Cemetery.  After much research, I have yet to find her death certificate, which would indicate place of burial.  This is not unusual; the death certificate has not been found for several people buried at Pond Springs, and it appears that the state requirement was not taken very seriously in the early years.
