The McClures, the Bookers, and the Brooks Families

“John McCLURE” married Mary Jane CARTEE in St. Francois County Missouri in October 1836.  The closest match I have found in the 1840 census is a John McClure in Cote Sans Dessein, Calloway County Missouri.  John was 60-70 years old;  IF this is the correct man, he was 42-52 years older than his wife !  There was a 15-20 year old female in his household (Mary? She would have been 18), as well as a male <5 years old (Green?), a male 10-15 years old, and two females 20-30 years old.  I am doubtful that this is the correct family, however it is the closest match that I could find. The husband of Mary CARTEE McCLURE died 1846-1850, as their last known child was born ca. 1846, and Mary was a widow in the 1850 census (dated 4 September 1850).

Mary BROOKS was born 25 September 1820 in Missouri.  She died 13 June 1903 in Hamilton County Texas.  She is buried in Carlton Cemetery; her tombstone reads “Wife of John Brooks”

In the 1850 St. Francois County Missouri census, 28-year-old Mary McCLURE was a widow with five children.  Next door are Moses and Elizabeth CARTEY (Mary’s parents?).  Mary was born in Missouri.

Sometime between 1850 and 1860, Mary remarried to John P/B BROOKS, as the family can be found in the 1860  Barry County Missouri census.   This is the same John BROOKS who is buried in Pond Springs Cemetery (1825-1894).  John BROOKS was therefore the step-father of Green McCLURE and Elizabeth (McCLURE) BOOKER.  I have not found John BROOKS with certainty prior to the 1860 census.

Known children of John and Mary Jane (CARTEE) McCLURE:

i.  Green McCLURE born in Missouri 24 November 1837, died 6 October 1881 in Williamson County Texas.  Green is buried in Pond Springs Cemetery.  On 12 February 1857, he married Susan Catherine STEWART in Cassville, Berry County, Missouri.  Susan Catherine, the daughter of Laban and Nancy STEWART, was born in Alabama on Christmas Day 1840.  She died in Cedar Park, Williamson County Texas 23 February 1932, and is also buried in Pond Springs Cemetery.  In the 1880 Williamson County Texas census, Green’s father was said to have been born in Ireland.

Wednesday, February 24, 1932.”

“She died of blood poisoning, caused by a bee stings during a swarm. Della Campbell Strickland related to her daughter, Fae, that her mother, Laura, was attacked by a swarm of bees, miscarried a child, and died. Della, then nearly five, recalled seeing bees in her mother’s hair as she lay dead.  William Campbell apparently felt the McClures could better raise the children than he could. The McClures, over the years, it is said, helped raise sixteen orphaned children of various relatives.  Nevada And Bessie McClure helped their mother raise the 2 Campbell children.  Nevada & Bessie were the last McClures to live on the farm. After his wife’s death William moved to Idaho and had a small store and pool hall.  He died in an auto accident in 1929.  Della Campbell related that all of his children were very attached to him, that he visited when he could, bringing gifts and tales of cave exploring.  After his death, the Campbell farm at Leander was left to all his children, as well as his assets in Idaho.”

e.  Nancy Ellen McCLURE, born in Texas 8 November 1869, died 19 September 1880.  Ellen is not listed with the family in the 1880 Williamson County Texas census.  She is buried in Pond Springs Cemetery.  According to descendant Karen, she was blind from birth.

Known children of John and _____ BROOKS (I can’t tell if Mary Cartee was their mother, or if John had a previous wife; however as it does appear that Mary was a widow in the 1850 census, then Harvey might be from a previous wife):

ii.  Martha BROOKS, born in Missouri ca. 1851/52.

iii.  John BROOKS, born in Missouri ca. 1853.

  1. Suzanne, I am sending you a long email with various additional information which you may or may not choose to incorporate into your summary of John Brooks/Green McClure. Hoping to add more inforamtion here soon.

  2. Do not have a source but I had a note that William Brooks was “inside a fenced plot with his father John B. Brooks”… not his step father. Who would be his step father?
Isn’t WIlliam one of the known children of John Brooks and possibly Mary Jane Cartee(Carty)…( wording) applaud your work.

    • Thanks ! Yikes let me change that now. When were John and Mary married?

  3. Richard Benton McClure is born in Williamson County not William County… I know .. a typo
