Our Mr. Decker

Sitting alone in a large clearing of the cemetery lies the grave of Joseph DECKER.  He only lived 12 days.  His is one of the finer and sturdier pieces of marble in the cemetery, it must have cost his family a small fortune, and it has always amazed me that this vulnerable one was never destroyed like so many others.

Joseph DECKER was the youngest child born to Theodore Frelinhousen and Lillie (WASSON) DECKER.  They no doubt grieved this child.

Theodore DECKER was born in Pennsylvania in July of 1840 and died apparently in Marble Falls Texas between 1900 and 1910.  Lillie was born in Texas in February of 1861.  In the 1900 Williamson County Texas census, Lillie was the mother of 9 children, 8 living.  The family moved around quite a lot.  In 1910, the family was in Comanche County Oklahoma; in 1920, Edmond Oklahoma; in 1930, Wichita Falls Texas.  Lillie died in Bakersfield California 18 December 1947.

Known children of Theodore and Lillie (WASSON) DECKER:

i.  Lara/Laura J. DECKER, born in Texas June 1878.  In the 1910 Williamson County Texas census, Laura was a teacher.

ii.  Arthur J. DECKER, born in Texas 16 January 1880, died in Dallas Texas 18 December 1934.  His death certificate states that his mother was Lillie DAVIS, and his father was born in Nebraska (not Pennsylvania).  Buried in Restland Memorial Park.

iii.  Albert Washington DECKER, born in Texas February 1882.

iv.  Della/Stella DECKER, born in Texas December 1883.

v.  Theodore DECKER, born in Texas January 1885.

vi.  Josephine DECKER, born in Texas September 1888.  In the 1910 Williamson County Texas census, Laura was a teacher.

vii.  Lemuel Amos DECKER, born in Texas 7 May 1891/1892, died 6 March 1967 in Amarillo, Potter County Texas.

viii.  Elmer A. DECKER, born in Texas 24 December 1893/1894, died in Dallas Texas 13 September 1948.  His death certificate states that his father was born in Nebraska (not Pennsylvania).  Buried in Restland Memorial Park.

ix.  Joseph DECKER, born in Texas 14 September 1898, died 26 September 1898.

x.  Wynona L. DECKER, born in Texas ca 1904.  She is listed as a daughter in the 1910 Comanche County Oklahoma census.   The peculiar thing is, Lillie still says she is the mother of 9 children 8 living.

  1. Thank you for the write up about the Decker family. They were my ancestors. Albert Washington Decker is the proper name for one of their children, not Albert Wendell Decker. He was my grandfather. Your story about little Joseph is much appreciated.
