Baby, What a Big Surprise

Like all of us, I’ve always known that the cemetery had its fair share of children.  Most are birth-related, many are due to the diphtheria epidemic, also Scarlet Fever, Tuberculosis (it was also epidemic), Typhoid, poor nutrition for some, Kerosene poisoning, cancer, accidents — and for others we just don’t know the cause.  But I never grasped it all until today, as I have been planning to commemorate the children somehow, and I was enumerating those under 18.

Including the 9 that are ASSUMED buried here, there are 70 known children buried here (39 girls, 31 boys).  That’s out of 231.  Which means that of all the known persons buried in Pond Springs Cemetery, 30.3% – or almost a third – are children.

My plan is to place pink or blue bows at their graves; looks like I will have to buy more ribbon.  And there are so many whose graves are unknown, what to do about them?

  1. This is my grandmother’s sister. My grandmother was Maude Ellen Rasor Richter. She was married to Alfred Henry Richter. They are both buried in the Saturn cemetery. I would like to receive more information regarding the Rasor’s.
